{"id":21,"date":"2024-08-14T05:22:20","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T05:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dementiafriendlytas.org.au\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2024-09-15T19:57:27","modified_gmt":"2024-09-15T09:57:27","slug":"our-story","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dementiafriendlytas.org.au\/index.php\/our-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h3>2014<\/h3>\n<p>Dementia Friendly Tasmania Incorporated commenced as Dementia Friendly Snug, the brainchild of Alison DeVries, who, supported by a small committee in 2014, set out to improve community knowledge and the understanding of dementia and those living with it.<\/p>\n<p>They held community information evenings, planted sunflowers, and held raffles and a quiz night to raise funds for purchasing a trishaw. As a trial, the first trishaw in Tasmania, on loan from Cycling Without Age, arrived in 2015.<\/p>\n<h3>2016 &#8211; 18<\/h3>\nDFT fundraised to purchase the first trishaw in Tasmania. Trishaw hired out to<br \/>\naged care homes to enable residents to safely get out into the fresh air to<br \/>\nenjoy and feel the &#8216;wind in their hair&#8217;.<br \/>\nOrganised community and group information sessions with specialist speakers.\n<h3>2019 &#8211; 22<\/h3>\n<p>Conducted education workshops, dementia friend training and community events eg held 3 Ageing Wonderfully Well Expos in Kingborough<\/p>\nThese Expos were to bring together a broad range of health and wellbeing and aged care services, to enable seniors and those living with dementia easy access to these services.<br \/>\nExpos were arranged with funding received from the Kingborough Council Community grant.\n<h3>2020 -21<\/h3>\nAttended governance training, recruited volunteers and paid for Working With Vulnerable People registrations funded through a Federal Government Volunteers grant.<br \/>\nDFT was a finalist in the Tasprint Community Group of the Year Award.\n<p>DFT with assistance from then parliamentarian Dr Bastian Seidel launched Parliamentary Friends of Tasmania<\/p>\n<h3>2021 -22<\/h3>\nInclusive Wellbeing Initiative involving a community survey in Kingborough, which led to the development and dissemination of an information poster series, &#8220;I Live with Dementia,&#8221; funded by Dementia Australia&#8217;s\u00a0Dementia Friendly Communities grant.<br \/>\nSelf-care workshops were held in remote\/isolated areas. Featured 3 and 1.5-hour workshops with local dietician Ngaire Hobbins and local seniors fitness trainer Sue Leitch. Workshops made available by Kingborough Council Community<br \/>\ngrant funding.\n<h3>2023<\/h3>\n<p>Setting up \u00a0monthly a dementia friendly caf\u00e9 became the main focus, growing to become three different cafes and a craft afternoon each month.
