2014
Dementia Friendly Tasmania Incorporated commenced as Dementia Friendly Snug, the brainchild of Alison DeVries, who, supported by a small committee in 2014, set out to improve community knowledge and the understanding of dementia and those living with it.
They held community information evenings, planted sunflowers, and held raffles and a quiz night to raise funds for purchasing a trishaw. As a trial, the first trishaw in Tasmania, on loan from Cycling Without Age, arrived in 2015.
2016 – 18
DFT fundraised to purchase the first trishaw in Tasmania. Trishaw hired out to
aged care homes to enable residents to safely get out into the fresh air to
enjoy and feel the ‘wind in their hair’.
Organised community and group information sessions with specialist speakers.
2019 – 22
Conducted education workshops, dementia friend training and community events eg held 3 Ageing Wonderfully Well Expos in Kingborough
These Expos were to bring together a broad range of health and wellbeing and aged care services, to enable seniors and those living with dementia easy access to these services.
Expos were arranged with funding received from the Kingborough Council Community grant.
2020 -21
Attended governance training, recruited volunteers and paid for Working With Vulnerable People registrations funded through a Federal Government Volunteers grant.
DFT was a finalist in the Tasprint Community Group of the Year Award.
DFT with assistance from then parliamentarian Dr Bastian Seidel launched Parliamentary Friends of Tasmania
2021 -22
Inclusive Wellbeing Initiative involving a community survey in Kingborough, which led to the development and dissemination of an information poster series, “I Live with Dementia,” funded by Dementia Australia's Dementia Friendly Communities grant.
Self-care workshops were held in remote/isolated areas. Featured 3 and 1.5-hour workshops with local dietician Ngaire Hobbins and local seniors fitness trainer Sue Leitch. Workshops made available by Kingborough Council Community
grant funding.
2023
Setting up monthly a dementia friendly café became the main focus, growing to become three different cafes and a craft afternoon each month. See services for details.
